What exactly is baptism
Baptism is in outward expression of an inward decision to allow God to change your life, and ordain your future.
Why do I have to go in the water?
In Matthew 3:16 we see that Christ went out into the water to be baptized: "16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;". The initial answer is so that we are sure to follow Christ's example.
Also, every baptism after that was done through immersion in water, check out Acts 8:38-39: “…then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water….”
Lastly let's look at the actual world "baptize", which is derived from the Greek word, "baptizo". The word baptizo as a verb is translated to mean "to dip", "to plunge", "to be drenched", "to be drowned," and "getting in deep water." The word and act of baptism literally tells us exactly what to do.
Do I have to be baptized in order to be saved?
Short answer, no. Now, lets look at why... John1:9 "9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." No where does it say anything about baptism.
Here is another scripture to reiterate what we are saying, Romans 10:8-10 "8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved." Once again, the scripture is very clear as to how we can obtain salvation, and once again, it doesn't mention baptism.
So, why should you get baptized? So that the rest of the world can celebrate your decision, so that you can be completely obedient in your walk with Christ, and so that you can publicly let the world know "I choose Jesus".
